Tomatin Distillery: A Highland Whisky's Enigma Unveiled.

Updated: Jul 29, 2024

Nestled amidst the rolling hills of the Scottish Highlands, Tomatin distillery stands as a maverick. While some might argue its Speyside leanings, others champion its unwavering Highland heritage. Regardless of the regional debate, Tomatin possesses a unique charm that transcends geographical labels.

In recent years, Tomatin has shed its "under the radar" persona, embracing a more prominent role in the whisky world. Global Brand Ambassador Scott Adamson has spearheaded this shift, fostering connections and promoting the brand with a passionate spirit.

The 2021 launch of the French Collection perfectly exemplified this new direction. Supported by captivating videos, the campaign was a slick, contemporary affair. Yet, amidst the modern sheen, Adamson emphasized a core value: accessibility. Tomatin prioritizes creating exceptional whisky for enthusiasts, offering limited-edition releases at reasonable prices – a refreshing departure from the elitism plaguing many brands.

This ethos carries over into 2022, marking the distillery's 125th anniversary. Instead of resorting to exorbitantly priced, limited-edition bottlings, Tomatin commissioned the artistry of Emily Hogarth. Her intricate papercut artwork now adorns the 12-year-old boxes, a celebration of creativity that stands in stark contrast to the exclusivity often employed by big names.

Further solidifying their new approach, Tomatin unveiled the "To What Matters" campaign in 2022.

This abstract initiative allows consumers to project their own values onto the story, fostering a sense of personal connection. This clever strategy speaks volumes about Tomatin's evolving brand identity, one that prioritizes inclusivity and shared experiences.

Now, let's delve into the heart of Tomatin's offering: the 12-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch.

Tomatin's 12 Year Old is a testament to the distillery's mastery of the distiller's art. Matured in a harmonious blend of bourbon and sherry casks, this single malt unveils a captivating symphony of flavors.

The nose, a verdant tapestry, weaves together the ethereal notes of wild heather, pine needles, hints of fresh bergamot and a subtle sweetness reminiscent of crème caramel. This enchanting prelude gives way to a palate that is a harmonious dance of orchard fruits, think pears and peaches, and gentle, woody spices, culminating in a velvety, full-bodied finish with citrus highlights that are counterbalanced by toasty oak.

Clocking in at an accessible ABV of 43% is a whisky that transcends mere consumption, inviting the drinker on a sensory journey through the heart of the Scottish Highlands. The interplay of flavors is a symphony of subtlety and complexity. Each sip reveals new nuances, a hidden depth that invites exploration.

It is a whisky that demands contemplation, especially since on terra australis it is available for purchase from Dan Murphy’s and BWS from $89.95, a companion for thoughtful moments and an invitation to a sensory journey through the heart of the Scottish Highlands, where the spirit of the land is captured in a glass.
